Meet IRMA WY

IRMA WY jewellery brand was founded in 2013 by artist-designer Irma Yasandikusuma.

IRMA WY invites you to travel with new perspectives, attentive to details. Her work is mainly inspired by Indonesian cultural artistry where her ancestry lies, blended with Parisian elegance where she mastered her art.

Elements of her work pay homage to urban lifestyle as well as natural landscapes, spirituality and soul music.
It flows with personal moods and emotions. Her pieces evoke these contrasts and are brought together in harmony,
giving a unique and genuine sense of beauty.

Irma

The Artist Background

Born and raised in Geneva, Switzerland, Irma Yasandikusuma had studied fashion design in Paris at the Studio Berçot and worked in different fashion houses. Her most notable experience was the role in the LANVIN House of Fashion as the jewellery and accessories assistant designer and had worked closely with the renowned Elie Top in 2010 until 2011. Followed through this enriching experience, Irma had taken part in many creative projects and officially started her own jewellery line IRMA WY in 2013.

Since then, she had expanded and established her name in Paris and Geneva by collaborating with privately-own luxury boutiques, art galleries and creative pop-up. During that time, IRMA WY has been featured in Pigalle concept store (Paris), The Broken Arm (Paris) and SOUQ (Bali).

After she had started designing her own collection line she later had felt the need to further explore the creations then had decided to come to Bali in 2016 to expand the line in her root country and collaborate more closely with Indonesian artisans in pursuance of cultivating her cultural heritage into the work weaved with what she had learned back in Europe.

Today IRMA WY brand counts five to seven people investing their manual and creative skills independently into unique pieces of jewellery. IRMA WY recently created an intimate exhibition at Bisma Eight hotel (Bali) and is now part of the iconic eco-friendly chain hotel Six Senses’s boutique (Bali).

Philosopy & Aim

To create with meaning and positive impact. The artist pursues a “slow creative process” aiming to enlighten hidden beauties. Her desire is to share opportunities with other talented creatives who deserve more exposure and sustainability in their work.

Technique & Materials

IRMA WY designs are realized through different techniques such as embroidery, painting, silver metal shaping and stone carving. She uses minerals and semi precious stones mainly sourced in Indonesia in order to celebrate local materials. The ribbons and petals are made out of end-of-stock or unused – mainly silk and cotton – fabrics that Irma gets from either natural dyes factory, designer ateliers or from high fashion brands end-of- stock textile bought in Paris when she visits the city.

IRMA WY CREATIVE COLLABORATORS

Ketut Siba

Ketut Siba

is our main silversmith. He has been a silver and gold jewellery artisan for many years. He has done amazing pieces for a lot of Balinese and foreign people from all over the world. He is also a Barong dance and Wayang (Balinese shadow puppet performer). Although he has worked with many international people, he has not changed his way of living, always keeping his Balinese traditions and his family at the center of his life, which is to Irma considered to be an amazing example of such integrity.
Ketut is happy to challenge himself to create many more new ideas, as Irma is always happy and eager to learn from his hand skills and work ethics to create many more beautiful collections.

Wayan Rani

is our main textile crafter. Irma met Wayan Rani in 2015, she was the guardian of her homestay in Bali. Along the way, they shared a lot of discussions and become close friend. Irma learned that she loved to create things with her hands, which had lead the designer to spontaneously show her the creative crafted work of IRMA WY. She then asked her if she would be willing to learn the techniques and in this way be part of the creative team. She agreed and Wayan has helped crafting the textile parts of the collections ever since.

Moklis

Moklis

is our main stone sculptor. He used to be a street singer in Java until someone gave him the opportunity to come to Bali to work in a small restaurant. As it sounded like a better opportunity he took the chance and flied to Bali. Until he realized that someone else had already filled the job (without being informed prior). He felt lost until someone asked him if he would like to work as rubbing stones. He had no choice but to accept it, even though with a miserable salary. As time went on, he started to enjoy and felt that he was good for the job. So it was with determination and hard work, he was finally able to work independently. Designer Irma is glad to be able to help on sustaining his business as well as him to IRMA WY.
